"Your own resolution to success is much more important than another one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
Bianca rose on the sound of pigeons cooing and traffic grumbling all the time below. As she yawned and stretched, she seriously considered what was waiting for her that day.
She felt her motivation slowly drain away with every deadline and commitment that zipped through her thoughts. As Bianca began to wither and wilt internally, she remembered the motivation pills she'd purchased last week from your Good Value Pharmacy.
There are yellow pills labeled 'Money', pink pills labeled 'Pride', green pills labeled 'Family', purple pills labeled 'Respect' and several ugly grey pills labeled 'Nagging Advice'. The chemist had shared with her as he dispensed the pills that some would work for her and some may not... he could never tell beforehand which pills works for which customers. With this advice in mind along with a smile on her lips, Bianca reached for your one she knew will be just right for her...

The initial step is to identify your values while they provide the fuel on your motivation and the drive behind all you do in life. If you want something you will always find the motivation and energy to get it done. If you don't value something, you'll always struggle to discover the motivation and energy to acheive it.

Your values are precisely what are important to you. They are the broad concepts that guide your decisions in your life and form the basis of your character. Your values also figure out how you spend your time. For example, if your most important value is health, you will spend your time quite differently from someone whose most critical value is career or family.
Values also drive all of your motivation. You won't pursue a strategy unless it relates to something you value at some level. Identifying your values allows you to kick-start your own motivation, set goals which can be appropriate and spend some time on things that you need.
How Your Values Are Formed
Your values result from a number of sources together with your family, friends, religion, school, teachers, country along with the media. They are also shaped without notice in your life by significant emotional events including natural disasters, emotional abuse, global depression or war.
Your values change as you grow and evolve. Whenever you change your values, additionally, you will change some of your beliefs and in what way you live life.
The best way to Identify Your Personal Values
Identifying your personal values helps you to:
- Understand why some issues can be a problem for you;
- See why a lot of things motivate you and others don't; and
- Identify and overcome troublesome areas of your life.
For example, assume you have weight issues. You determine your individual values and find that physical fitness and health doesn't even rate a mention within your values. You may have found the reason why you are having weight issues, i.e. physical fitness is not something you value. While this remains the case it'll be very difficult for you to slim down and gain a greater degree of health and fitness in your life because you will not have any motivation to take action.
You can identify your values by questioning:
- What is important to me with regards to my life, career, relationships etc?
- What would cause me to go away my life, career, relationships, etc?
If you have an understanding of your values, it will pay to see how they affect your motivation.
Your values drive your motivation. If you set goals that are aligned with your values, you will have the motivation to help you achieve them. In the event you set goals that are not in line with your values, it will likely be an uphill struggle to achieve them.
If you understand your values along with their impact on how you are currently motivating yourself you'll have a wonderful insight into the reasons you achieve the results which you do in life. You will also discover how to motivate yourself more effectively in the foreseeable future.
Motivation comes either from inside you (intrinsic motivation) or from an outside source (extrinsic motivation).
Extrinsic motivationis furnished by some factor external for your requirements. It can take the form of inducements (rewards) or punishments. The rewards might be tangible or intangible (such as praise).
Intrinsic motivationis evident when you engage in an activity for its own sake without the external incentive. It seems like from research made by Albert Bandura that if you might have more self efficacy (belief in your own abilities to control your environment) you happen to be more highly intrinsically motivated than other individuals.
As intrinsic motivation may be the only one you can wear and call upon whenever you want, it is the most important with regards to self motivation.
Intrinsic motivation can be broken down further into 'towards' motivation and 'away from' motivation. 'Towards' motivation is motivation towards something you want and 'away from' motivation is motivation away from something you don't want.
'Away From' Motivation
'Away from' motivation is driven by pain. Pain motivated performance is just not pleasant, produces inconsistent results and disappears in the event the pain is no longer present.
'Away from motivation' does, however, offer you a strong initial motivation to go away from the thing you don't want in your own life. A problem with using this type of motivation is you wait until things are bad before you take action to change them. Additional problems is that you don't have a target or goal that you are aiming for (just something you are running from) so you don't tend to achieve results.
Sophia uses 'away from' motivation in terms of her weight. As a result she is the classic yo yo dieter. Her process goes this way. Sophia looks in the mirror and sees that she is overweight. She says to herself, 'I don't wish to be fat anymore'. She then proceeds a diet to ensure jane is no longer fat. (Jane is moving away from being fat). At some time she looks from the mirror and sees that she looks fantastic and is no longer fat. As jane is no longer fat, she's got just lost the foundation of her motivation (to no longer be fat). As there is will no longer any motivation, she not stays on the diet and discards her exercise routine. She will not be motivated to complete whatever she has to stay fit and healthy. At some point in the future she will view in the mirror and again constitute the judgment that she is fat and the process will start yet again.
When you are motivated faraway from something that you don't want in everyday life, you tend to focus upon the thing you don't want and that is what you attract into your life. As examples:
- If you constantly inform yourself, 'I don't want to be broke', your focus is upon being broke which is where your unconscious mind will aim.
- If you constantly notify yourself, "I don't want to be single", your focus is upon being single which is where your unconscious mind will aim.
Motivation faraway from what you don't want can inspire you, but it doesn't do this for long and you cannot be sure what results you will achieve. It can supply you with a fantastic initial boost of their time, but you can never guarantee where you stand going to end up as you do not possess a firm direction in your mind, just a place you need to get away from. If you use faraway from motivation in your life, you'll tend to create a compilation of crises to keep yourself motivated.
The use of 'towards motivation' you will take action to move towards your goal and you may achieve them usually.
'Towards' motivation is the best method to motivate yourself. When you are motivated towards what you want, you tend to stay consistently motivated before you achieve your goal (provided you desire it enough).
When you're motivated towards what you want, you constantly set and get goals each time stretching yourself further. By using motivation towards what you would like you give yourself a much larger chance of achieving what you would like out of life.
How can you tell If The Motivation You employ Is 'Towards' Or 'Away From' Motivation?
We now know that values drive your motivation understanding that motivation can be either towards what you need or away from whatever you don't want. Now it is time and energy to review your values to find out whether the underlying motivation for every of your values is:
- towards what you would like; or
- away from whatever you don't want.
To determine perhaps the underlying motivation for each value is 'towards' or 'away from' think about, "Why is that value vital that you me?" then tune in to your self-talk and note what you say to yourself. The clues as to if you are using towards or faraway from motivation for that value are:
You are probably using 'towards' motivation if you:
- talk about what you do want
- don't use comparisons inside your explanation (better than, worse than, greater than)
You are probably using 'away from' motivation in case you:
- talk about what you don't want
- make comparisons inside your explanation or use words including 'better than', 'more than', 'less than', 'best' etc. (These explain to you are unhappy with in places you currently are)
- use words including 'must', 'need', 'have to', 'got to' etc
As an example, assume that 'money' was your highest value in terms of your career. You then ask yourself, "Why is the value 'compensation' important to me in relation to my career?"
Should your answer is, "Because I want to come up with a lot of money and are now living in luxury", the response would indicate 'towards' motivation with this value.
If your response is, "Because I don't want to be broke i have to be able to pay my bills", the response would indicate 'away from' motivation because of this value.
Your chances of achieving goals associated with 'money' are much greater if you work with towards motivation.
Should you have identified 'away from' motivation in terms of any of your values, you will discover:
- This area of your life is one where you will experience the most difficulties;
- You will never be achieving the results in el born area of your life that you might wish; and

This is wonderful information to possess as it identifies areas of your life for you to focus upon.
